Central Little League: Charlottesville, VA

Tentative Schedule and General Information

In the past year, Spring registrations increased from 192 to 205 for a 6.8% increase and the largest Spring we've had since 2009.  This Fall, registrations increased from 110 to 121 for a 10% increase and the largest Fall in Central's history.  We as a board continue to focus on recruitment and have placed more importance in online recruiting over the postal flyer method we used years ago along with being able to maintain our ability to provide spots to those families in need, which we have been able to do quite well.  Todd Divers, our Secretary, spent much time working on our Facebook ads and his efforts continue to pay off.  Not only has this shown us strong results, our costs of recruitment have decreased dramatically without the postal expenses.  Jason Ness, our league VP, spent an inordinate amount of time increasing our number of sponsors by almost 30%.  We now have almost filled our outfield wall with local businesses.  Also, on an idea from our Treasurer, Raul Arbelaez, we held our first league-wide fundraiser and raised over $8,000.  Stay tuned over the Winter as we turn some of that capital into field upgrades as we continue to try to provide the best baseball experience we can.

We continued our little league required practice of performing background checks on all of our volunteers and had another season without injury.  Due to our lack of claims in past years and our fully updated safety plan, our insurance costs remain the lowest that Little League provides.  Leigh Hughes, our Safety Officer, continues to work hard for us in this regard.

Andy Jaspen, our Concessions Director, expanded the food selections we provided this year and we saw an increase in the amount of money that the snack shack contributes to our overhead.  Our total revenue was down only due to the fact that we did not host the City Championship, as it was McIntire's year to do so.

Our fields have been in great shape and we can thank the efforts of several board members and parents for that work especially Rob Cahall, Chris Reid, Jose Reyes, and Muggsie Marini.  Champ Lawson, who both coaches and sponsors the league, has recently put in a ton of effort to provide us with a plan to keep the fields in great shape for years to come and we are grateful to him as well.

We continue to set the trend in the area in the way that we set an example for our children playing baseball.  Our Umpire Crew, led by Brian Helmke, volunteers tirelessly and our parents and players show more appreciation than in other leagues.  Our culture here at Central Little League keeps evolving but we all believe that our children are learning great baseball, strong work ethic, and an appreciation for each other of which we can all be proud.

As we commence upon another year, we would like to ask each of you as parents to consider volunteering next season.  While we are always thrilled to add more board members, specifically we would like to ask for parents who would consider being any of the following:

Raffle coordinator

Assistant Player Agent

Assistant Treasurer

Sponsorship Liaison

Each of these positions are much lighter in terms of workload than our board positions and having someone fill them would help immensely.  Additionally, our board members oversee each of these positions so you would get some direction.  If you are interested, please email Michael Phillips at [email protected].

We appreciate each of you choosing Central Little League to be a part of your family and we are grateful to all of you for the time you put in to helping us provide the best baseball experience we can.  Please consider attending the general membership meeting and volunteering your time and we look forward to seeing you all around the baseball diamond!
